Solved: Disk Cleanup doesn't clear 'Compress Old Files'
PC frequently runs slowly and when Disk Cleanup is run it always shows around 300,000 files, i.e. they never clear out. I also seem to have to Defrag more than I should. Any suggestions appreciated.

Selecting Compress Old Files won't delete anything. It means files that haven't been used in a long time will be compressed (made smaller) to free disk space. When you use Explorer to see what's in various directories, compressed files should be highlighted in blue.

Thanks
Thanks for that, but should the same amount of files be shown again each time, even if Disk Cleanup is run again immediately after it has been to told clear out. If as you say they have been compressed, should they show a similar if it is run again?

Why not just get rid of that annoyance?

Remove "Compress Old Files"

I'm not sure if that will remove it from the options in the final box, but it will prevent the machine from looking for them. In fact, because machines were locking up on that part, the fix may already have been aaplied to your machine, so your machine still has the option but no longer seraches for new ones, which would explain why there is no change.

But since it is useless to compress files, I'd just run the fix.

You're right.

Try right-clicking this one and "Save Target As..." or "Save Link As...", depending what browser.

Remove "Compress Old Files"
