Question Solved: my-documents access denied
hi! my friends computer crashed and she asked me to transfer her files. i used the coolmax cd 350 combo to transfer them to an external hard drive. i can transfer everything except one folder under my-documents. it keeps saying "access denied." i'm using windows xp home edition service pack 3. i tried transferring in safe mode with administrative account but it's still denied. i also tried my-computer >tools>folder options>view>advance settings but i can't find the "use simple file sharing." please help, those files are her medical files. i'm hoping i can still retrieve them for her. thanks!

Hi apple3020,

Her document files are most probably locked to her user account. Please see the page at http://www.howtogeek.com/howto/windows-vista/add-take-ownership-to-explorer-right-click-menu-in-vista/

Install the Take Ownership addon and then right click on the My Documents folder and any other locked folders and select "Take Ownership", it should work on XP.

This should change the security settings on those folders and enable you to access them.

That won't work on XP as XP does not have the takeown.exe or icacls.exe programs that Vista and Win 7 do.
Follow these steps instead:

If you don't see the Security tab,

For XP Pro, read THIS.

For XP Home, simply reboot into Safe Mode.
