Angry I installed a new hard drive now what?
I installed a new hard drive in my brothers XPS 1530 Dell laptop. I tried to install the windows 7 but i keep getting a message that tells me no boot drives detected. i ran the pre-boot system assessment and everything has passed so far, what do i do now?

What is the exact message and what exactly do you do before you see it?

Are you using Dell's disks?

Have you tried advanced options to remove any current partitions?

The exact message is No bootable devices-- strike F1 to retry, F2 for setup utility, and F5 to run onboard diagnostics. I ran the diagnostics and everything passed except it said that diagnostics not found on the utility partition. All I have done is taken the dead hard drive out and replaced it with a new factory one. It is a bit bigger, went from 250 to 320, my brother forgot to bring me his disks when he brought me the hard drive to put in so he took it home thinking he could finish it, so i don't know what he did, but i have tried to upload windows 7 and i keep getting that no bootable devices message, when i turn the computer on all it does is shows the dell screen, and goes right to that error message, when i put a disk in the drive to upload, it cycles through that screen over and over again making a clicking noise from the cd drive

"No bootable devices" means that it is not seeing the CD or DVD as a bootable device. That is what the machine should boot from.

Check BIOS to be sure that the CD-ROM is listed as a bootable device and that it is at the top of the boot priority list.

Is the CD clean, unscratched? Have you had any problems with the CD drive?

You will need a new license for 7 if that DVD has already been used.

And if the drive you are using is not a DVD drive, you will not be able to use it to install 7 since 7 comes on DVD and not CD.

The recovery partition on the old drive contains your XP installation files. You may still be able to make recovery disks from it if you boot it up. In any case, you could make a disk image and put the recovery partition on the new drive.

Follow the directions on the screen. Read them all. They are not just chit-chat and they all mean something.

Yes. Get an English version. Or any language that you can read.

ok started to download windows 7 now new error
ok i got a screen that popped up that says compatibility report, it says that the computer started using the windows installation disc, remove the disc and restart your comp so that windows starts normally, then insert the disc and restart the upgrade, so i ejected the disk, turned the comp off and restarted it and put the disk back in now it says press any key to boot from cd but it won't do anything when i press a key, i am sorry about bugging, but i am desperate!!

What you have is an upgrade disk, it is not a full version operating system
