Cool Today is the 60th birthday of the bikini !


Introduced for the first time in Paris on July 5th 1946 by Louis Reard, a French engineer !

According to an article in the Daily Express it was actually the Americans who invented the bikini during war time rationing during the second world war. US Order L-85 was introduced by the War Rationing Board to save 15 per cent on domestic fabric products. On of the items to feel the pinch was the woman's bathing costume. A full 10 per cent of fabric had to be saved and so the midriff was slashed and the modern bikini was born. Rita Hayworth was pictured in her white two piece bathing costume in 1943. Apparently though it was the Romans who invented the two piece costume - mosaics dating from 300AD at the Villa Romana del Casale in Italy depict girls exercising in bikinis - so the Italians win by 1,700 years ! Just telling you what the newspaper says

You're right, bordercollie !
But the word bikini was used for the first time in 1946. It was related to the Bikini atoll where atomic bombs were tested by the Americans. The goal of using such word for the two pieces swimsuit was to equal women to anatomic bombs !
