John Glenn Howis 84 of Donora passed away peacefully on Saturday February 9, 2007 surrounded by his family at Mercy Hospital of Pittsburgh, following a brief illness. Mr Howis was born in Donora on October 27, 1922 a son of the late William Thomas and Maude Stacey Howis. He was a 1940 graduate of Donora High School and a 1947 graduate of Penn State University as a metallurgical engineer, He also attended Virgina Polytechnical Institute in Virginia and California University of Pa. He was a decorated WWII veteran serving in the South Pacific (Guadal Canal). Mr Howis retired from US Steel Corp working in Donora as chief plant metallurgist and later in Pittsburgh as the general manager of rod and wire technology. He was a member of AARP; Penn State Alumni Assoc, Friends of Donora Public Library, Tri-County Lodge #643 F&AM, and Calvary United Presbyterian Church in Donora. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years Marjorie Suffolk Howis; two daughters and sons in law Patricia (Harry Jr.) Bellora of Monongahela; Sandra (Mike Sr) Cermak of Waynesboro Pa; Four grandchildren, of whom he was very proud Stacee Rutherford of Donora, Adam Bellora of Monongahela, Michael Cermak Jr and his wife Heather of Chambersburg, and Glenn H Cermak and fiancee Laura of Shippensburg. Also survived by his beloved cat Socks. Glenn loved spending time with his family. He enjoyed gardening and reading especially mysteries. Glenn was known for his interest in genealogy and local history especially Cement City. He enjoyed traveling and had visited Egypt, China, Japan, Germany, Guatemala, and England to name a few. He will be immensely missed by his family and friends. They will especially remember his quick wit and clever sense of humor. As per Glenn's wishes there will be no viewing or visitation. Burial will be at the discretion of the family. Donations in his memory may be made to the Donora Public Library, the Donora Elementary Center Library, or the charity of one's choice. The James A rabe Funeral Home Inc., Donora is in charge of arrangements.
