What do you think?
Hi, everyone -

I only joined the ranks of the computer literate a relatively short time ago. Now, at 55, I find myself babysitting 3 web sites and 2 eBay stores.

My boss introduces me as the webmaster, but I feel like I'm far from actually being one (I usually try to sidestep the question with a bit of humor, saying I'm a websites babysitter [as I did above] or, if push comes to shove, call myself a web site administrator.)

I've decided to look into learning what I need to learn to feel more like I have a right to call myself a webmaster (albeit a novice one). I have a pretty good grasp of html, all self taught, and would appreciate suggestions on what to learn next: CSS or javascript? I know I should learn both, but being an old f*rt I have to take it a bit at a time.

So, what's the general consensus? I'd value your opinions.

Thanks!

George

Probably CSS. From designing the simplest sites to a Wikipedia it makes it easier to use styles over and over again and to make more beautiful sites. CSS is a pretty simple mark-up language, easily readable. Once you get the basic idea, you can just sit down with a cheat sheet and make layouts and styles. Then maybe JavaScript or PHP. They're both harder to learn, though.

Thanks, ferijah1, I appreciate the input. If I may pick your brain a little further, what's the difference between javascript and php? Is one "better" than the other? Thanks again.

JavaScript is client-side. It shows up in the source code and adds interactivity. PHP is server-side, for things like randomly showing an image or collecting submitted form data.
