Need Help Updating IE
Trying to update the browser and outlook explorer on a mac running os9.

I downloaded the versions for this os. They showed up in a download screen complete; running them put .smi files on the desktop. Running those gave me the license screen and a messgae to copy the folder to the HD - I dragged and dropped onto the HD icon. I made an alias onto the desktop (yay me).

I think I still need to UNINSTALL the previous versions. They're there and they are what's running by default. In fact, when I click IE 5.1.7 the splash screen comes up and goes away and nothing happens. Outlook express seemed to work ok.

It doesn't look like apple updates the existing browser like windows does.

How do I get rid of the old versions? Do I need to save and import the favorites and other settings?

BTW, I am NOT a mac user - no no no. This is a pity assignment for someone in a small town. I'm ready to tell her it's a frisbee by now... lol

Thanks.

If you made an alias of the newest version, and double click that alias, it should be the newest version that opens. If older version is opening, you may be using an old alias. Open the browser, click on the apple menu (upper left corner), and click on "about Internet Explorer". It will tell you which version you are using. This works on any program. You shouldn't have to uninstall the older versions, unless you just want to. In that case, drag the program's folder to the trash. Also go into system folder > to preferences folder, and toss anything to do with IE. If a whole folder is there for IE, the "Favorites" may be in it. If the Favorites didn't automatically install into the new version, you may want to copy and paste them into the new one. When you toss the preferences for IE, if you'll open IE again, it'll automatically rebuild a new set of preferences............

Just for your info, if you are at the desktop, with no open apps, and click the apple menu, then click "about this mac" or "about this computer", it will tell you which OS is used, how much ram you have installed and how much virtual memory you're using.
Good luck!

Ok, the new browser is opening but nothing is loading - it can't find pages. I connected it to our office satellite network to download the update. I know I had to set up a network connection - in Internet Control Panel I see our office as one of the networks. I need to get rid of it - "Set" it's called.

I don't know how to get it to go back to using the dialup settings. Thanks.

How do I Get it Back to Dialup?
Been helping someone with a Mac running OS9. I'm not a mack person at all!

I connected it to our office satellite network to download the update. I know I had to set up a network connection - in Internet Control Panel I see our office as one of the networks. I need to get rid of it - "Set" it's called.

I don't know how to get it to go back to using the dialup settings. Thanks. By now I don't even remember how I got it to connect to our network & satellite.

Next time someone brings in a mac, I gonna run fast.

Apple does not update the existing browser in Classic. Internet Explorer is third party software meaning it has no affilation with Apple, Inc.
You need to go here and download version 5.1.7 This will update IE.

To get rid of the old versions just go to the Applications menu and drag the folder named Internet Explorer out and into the trash. That's how you uninstall on a Mac.

In OS 9.X you might want to go to System/Preferences and delete the old prefs files for whatever you're trashing, as well. It won't (usually) hurt anything for the old files to be there, but it just adds clutter to the system and eats up (a tiny amount) of disk space. Sometimes, however, having old prefs files can cause strange behavior in freshly-updated software.
