i mac Graphite - DVD player dissappeared!
Hi - Hoping someone can help... The DVD player on my imac is gone - can't figure out why - is there anyway to download it for free? Or reinstall it without re-installing OS. Thanks!!

If you start an OS install, you should be given an option of a custom install (possibly in a drop down menu). You can then install any PART of the OS you want.
You can also do a "Clean Install", which will install a new system folder, without bothering any other files.
If you're using OS 8.6 or OS 9xxx, you can try trashing the "system prefs" in the preferences folder, and re-booting. That has fixed my iMac before, when it didn't recognize my cd rom anymore.
Also, in your system folder, see if there's a folder called "Disabled Extensions", and see if there's anything in there, to do with the drive. If so, drag it back into the extensions folder, and reboot.
Good luck! I hope this helps.

Still Not Working.
Thanks for your reply. I can't find my original OS discs and at some point I updated to OS 10.2.8. Not sure when the DVD player stopped working. I think it may be a software conflict?? Is there a way to download a new dvd player?

You can check at www.versiontracker.com to see if they have a player you can use. They have a lot of nice freeware and shareware.
Good luck! Let us know if you find something?
