yaboot & linux...
Ok, so on my G3 mac, i decided id install Ubuntu or Kubuntu. I stuck in the install disc, figured out how to boot the installer, installed it, sorted.

Now when I boot the Mac i get into Yaboot the bootloader. I tell it to boot "Linux" and it does some loading, then gets to a screen with all this info that makes no sense. I tried the Kubuntu disc, same thing. I tried to boot the install disc again so i could reinstall linux, but on loading the cd, i get back to the same screen. none of it makes sense, and i obviously cant do a screen capture.

I then tried booting the LIVE cd, but SAME thing. I got no idea what is going on. Any ideas? I just want to boot the install cd so i can redo everything again.

I am very familiar with installing linux and with the ubuntu distros, but this mac is driving me crazy.

Late,

Are you using the PPC version of Ubuntu, and what exactly are the errors you're getting?

Yes, I am using the PPC version. I don't know if it is an error or not. At first if I type "Linux" at the promt to boot, it says "Linux" not found on partitiong... The partition list looks really weird - nothing like PC. Then it "boots" linux, but stalls at this one page - it isn't Linux related. It says "decompressing kernel" then stops on this page. I'll try and take a pic of it with my camera - its hard because its white on black.

Did you let Ubuntu do your partitions automatically? Do you know which version of the G3 you have?

I manually did the partitions. It took me a while to get the installer to accept the setup - I am unfamiliar with the mac partitions system, but think I figured it out. I'm not sure what model it is. All I can do is describe what it looks like - which I imagine is fairly useless. And since it no longer has the mac OS I can't find out from that.

Did you get through the stage of the install where you enter your username and password?
If so, what happened after that? The desktop is supposed to appear at that point.

I'm guessing this is a problem with your partitions and yaboot.conf. I'd highly reccommend allowing Ubuntu to do the partitioning automatically if you aren't familiar with mac partitions.

Yeah, it fully installed. It rebooted, and decompressed all the packages like it was supose to, then nothing.

Well, I'm happy to do auto partitioning if I can get the install media to boot properly.
