I own an old mac laptop with original OS.

whenever I turn on my laptop, I keep getting a question mark icon (like a folder icon) flashing on screen. I can't use my mouse.

The computer is searching for, but is unable to find, a valid Operating System. I don't know what this "original OS" is that you mention, but whatever OS you're running has become corrupted somehow.

There's a chance a program such as TechTool Pro or (if it's pre-Mac OS X) Norton Utilities can diagnose and possibly fix whatever the problem (or problems) is (or are).

But chances are you're going to have to reinstall the OS from the install disk(s) that came with the computer.
