Powerbook vs. Ibook
okay so seriously I want to buy a mac laptop becasue my g3 desktop is startin to drive me crazy. But how come mac laptops cpu clock speed is so slow compared to sadly a gateway laptop. now powerbooks are a bit faster that ibooks so what would you recomend I do buy a powerbook or an ibook or wait to see what happens with the whole intel chip thing?

RISC v. CISC. Fewer cycles required (though they're still behind the curve of the G5s).

This will all change when Apple starts putting Intel chips in PowerBooks.

Just so you know, the rumor is that the intel based macs will be around in January. Not very long to wait.

That's not so much of a rumor, since it's pretty much what Jobs said in the speech announcing the switch.

I'm not sure Intel-based PowerBooks will be that quick off the line, though.

Haha, I guess not then. Thats just what a friend of mine told me who is more into all things Mac than I thought possible. It was some time ago though, so I guess its no longer a rumor.

the powerbook on intel isn't coming for awhile yet as they'll use a more high end dual core cpu which isn't going to be online until 3rd quarter next year back to school maybe mid-summer. They will only run emulation with rosetta for existing applications. The current crop of g4s are underpowered by comparison to pcs. However they DO run nicely. So i leave it to you to decide. The intel based Macs this January will be Mac Minis and iBooks based on the Yonah dual core cpu.

patience is a virtue
If I were looking to buy a new laptop from Apple. I would be a little more patient and get a Powerbook. Soon they are going to have to make them G5's they've been G4's for way too long. The new Intel chip should be finding it's way shortly into the new Powerbook. The new processor is a dual core Pentium extreme edition equivalent. Which would smoke the G4 processor. My suggestion is to wait for that day. I know I am. I want one too but there is no way I want a G4 compared to todays processors it's OK but nothing as awesome as a new G5.

I don't think a G5 will ever make it into the PB, too much power and heat. They could possibly get a G4 bump, but I'm going to assume any real update to the PB will be when they move to Intel......

Agree with Maclete expect the premium dual core intel laptop cpu to make it into the Apple/Intel Powerbook, and that by midsummer/back to school, The "Yonah" dual core cpu is not the premium laptop cpu. Thus G4s will stay in the Apple Powerbook until they go Intel. Choose your alternatives from this honest comfortable truth.
