Stop bouncing icons
The one thing that I abhore more than anything else, is an icon bouncing up and down when it decideds it has to have my attention Right Now!.

I'm sure I can't be the only one who feels this way?

I found a program called dock detox that claims to supress the bouncing, but it only seems to work up to version 10.3, and I'm running 10.4.

Does anybody know of a solution for stoping these icons in OS X 10.4?

Most programs have a way to turn that off. Check the preferences.

What would it be under? I looked in Word>preferences, but there wasn't one there.

There is usually a notification part of the preferences. I know it is in Word since we use Word on all our machines. < OK, I don't, I use neo Office> but the rest of my users do.
I just went and checked Word. I believe it's under General and it's the "Provide Feedback with animation" box you need to uncheck.
Entourage has the notification tab in it.

Go figure, Microsoft.

I have animate icon unchecked in the prefrences tab, but the giant "e" still bounces up a down (and waives its hands) whenever it can't connect to the server.

I did notice after posting what I did that you are on a PC. As I am a Mac user, maybe these things are only macintosh based. Mine doesn't bounce anymore.

sorry

That sounds a bit more like Explorer than Word. Changing preferences in Word will do nothing for the preferences in Explorer.

I am on a mac- It's just not a mac that I personnaly own, so I didn't put it in the sig area. (Belongs to the company).

The giant bouncing "e" is for Entourage. It is the most frequent offender.

Thanks,

Nick

System Preferences (Apple Menu -> System Preferences) and clicking on the Dock preferences in the top row. Inside the Dock preferences pane you turn off the checkbox for "Animate Opening Applications."

I've turned that one off- It's the other bouncing that doesn't have an apparent "off switch" that I find to be particularly irksome.

I checked a little more online, I agree with Nytemagic. The alert bouncing is going to be in each individual app. I notice it mostly from Toast 6, when a cd is done or Aquisition when a download is complete.

Have you tried setting the dock to being hidden?

It's really entougage thats the most annoying. when I use AIM it does it too. I still haven't been able to find the option in the prefrences though.

When the dock is hidden, it unhides the dock to bounce.

thanks-

It says:

"The Entourage icon bounces when there's a mail error (error in downloading or connecting). When the mail server has an error, Entourage passes it on.There's no way to make Entourage stop bouncing the icon when a connection failure occurs short of a 3rd party utility like Dock Detox."

thats the one its doing- I connect to three different mail accounts, depending on where I'm at, but at least one of them won't be able to connect.

The dock detox program that it mentions is the one i tried using, but it only works up to 10.3 and im running 10.4...

are there any other programs like dock detox that work in the current os x?

thanks,

nick
