Solved: email: Apple to XP
How do I transfer the address book & email messages, stored locally, from an Apple to a Dell running Windows XP Media Center SP2?

I don't know which version of the Apple OS. The computer is no more than 3 years old.

I don't know which email client that is used on the Apple.

I know how to burn a CD on the Apple.

The user will use either OE6 or Outlook 2003 for his email client, on the XP box.

This, I realize, is very sketchy information. Please tell me the information you need.

Sincerely,
B123

I'd just copy and paste them into an email, and send them to the pc, then copy them to the address book. May be a little more typing than you want to do, but would be easy and fairly quick............
Good luck!

Thanks for the reply.

Yes, quite a bit of additional typing. The user has HUNDREDS of email addresses / contacts.

How do I transfer the email messages?

I'd just forward them.............
Maybe someone else knows an easier way.
Good luck!

The email address is the same, so forwarding them wouldn't be useful.

So? What's that got to do with anything? You can send email to your own address. It's a matter of which computer you get your email with. Email goes to your isp's server, and sits there, until you retrieve it. Just retrieve it with the pc...............
Good luck!

Hey. I'm guessing this user is using Apple's built in Mail application.

First thing you'll need to do is copy the folder /Users/*username*/Library/Mail onto the Windows desktop, by, for example, just burning it onto cd and then copying the cd's contents onto his computer.

The easiest option you'd have now is to use the program Emailchemy (use Google). It will guide you through the motions. This is a paid option though (there is some mention that this would be free for one time use, but I haven't really figured out how to use it uncrippled even once).

There is also a harder way that would be free, but to describe this, I'd really need to know which OS version (higher or lower than 10.4 in particular) the user is using, because there's an annoying difference in the way Mail stores its messages before and after 10.4.

Anyway, if you don't mind spending 30 bucks, you'll find that Emailchemy will solve your problem well.

Zaan:
Thanks for the reply.

Apple OS X 10.4.2

Apple Mail 2.0.2 is the email client.

I am not an Apple user. Thus, I do not know how to "browse" to a folder. In Windows, I would open "my computer"; open "C:"; open "users". How do I do this using OS X?

I apologize for my ignorance.

Well, on OS X, that would be the very same way. Double click on the hard-disk icon on the desktop (Apple's "My Computer") then double-click users, then double-click a folder with the username of the user you're helping, then 'Library', then you should be able to see the folder titled Mail, which is the one you'll want to burn onto a cd and get into your windows desktop.

Mind you, when burning a cd, you should make sure that it burns a cd that is also accessible on pc.

I was able to "burn" the files to a CD. I think OS X's procedure of creating a "burn folder", copying the files to said folder, then burning the files, is cumbersome. Some files did not burn properly. The user is satisfied.

I could not find a way of exporting the address book to a .csv file. The user's Mac guru created a .pdf file of the address book.

Thanks for your input.
