Hi, Macs can't boot off of a USB drive, but they can read/write off of them after the OS loads. You can:
1. Purchase a Firewire DVD drive, and hook it up.
2. Send away for the CDs and use the CD drive.

I recommend getting the firewire drive, as many new software titles are using DVDs instead of CDs to install, but if your tight on money, then you can send away for the CDs.

Another thing about firewire is that it's 400mb/s.
Compare that to the speed of USB 1.1, which is only 12mb/s.

buy a firewire drive install a system on it and install your utilities. At boot up hold down the option button with the firewire drive connected and it will pick up that hard drive as a bootable system. I hope that helps.
