iMac restart blues
Our iMac G3 restarts at random times during the day. Until just recently, it was plugged into an outlet that wasn't holding the plugs very well... if the plugs were bumped, anything plugged into the outlet would lose power. I finally replaced the outlet, but I'm afraid the damage may have been done. Did we glitch up the iMac's power supply? If it is, how much would it cost to replace, and if not, what can I do to stop the computer from restarting?

The odd thing is that we also have a PC plugged into the same power strip. The iMac was affected, but the PC wasn't. While we were trying to figure out what was causing the problem, I was going through system preferences. I can't remember which screen I was on, but I had inadvertantly clicked on a button labeled "Reset to Default". Shortly afterward, the iMac lost all the bookmarks on the Safari browser, the Address Book lost its contacts and so did the iChat. Would Rest to Default have done all this. And is there a way to restore the lists? I don't think the data is gone, because the hard drive didn't have any significant amount of space freed up. Please help us with this.

Hmmm...
Hello,
Most times if an iMac gets to the desktop, problems are related to software. In this instance I'm not sure. Something could be heating up and causing craziness. Let's go with software...

You fail to mention which G3 iMac; slotload/trayload? or what OS....

Check "Options" under "Energy Saver", I bet you have checked "Auto restart After Energy Failure". This could possibly be kicking in when plug is moved.

Good Luck,
dp

The iMac has a slotload, running OS X 10.3.9. Since replacing the outlet, we no longer have a problem with moving the plug. We took the computer in to the only Mac store in the area for a diagnosis. They couldn't find anything wrong with the hardware. I then got Notron Utilities for Mac to scan the software. It fixed some issues but the restarting continued. Finally, we backed up all relevant data, reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled OS X. The computer has a lot more hard drive space now, but it still shuts down by itself, particularly in the middle of the night. I did have the Auto Restart option checked before, but I left it alone now. Any thoughts?

If you are original owner, I think you call Apple for some help. They may have PROM or firmware update that can help. 1.800.767.2775

I'm not aware of any Norton Utility that works with 10.39 Which v.is it?
