What, exactly, do you mean "won't accept disks"? You try to put in a disk and the computer spits it back out? You try to mount a disk on the desktop, but nothing happens? The disk appears on the desktop but there are no visible contents thereon?

Have you done the normal self-help things like zapping PRAM, rebuilding permissions?

I'll spare you the normal harangue for using all caps in the word "Mac".

I'll just assume you were copying your own CD for archival purposes and not violating copyright laws, thus sparing you yet another harangue and delaying my likelihood of acquiring a repetitive stress injury until a later date.

Go to the Apple Menu and select "About This Mac". In the window that appears click on the button labeled "More Info..." In the window that appears click on "ATA" under "Hardware" and see if your optical media drive appears.

If it does then there's nothing wrong with your drive and the problem could be with the disk(s) you're trying to mount.

If it does not something has happened to the drive. It could merely be disconnected, it could be dead, or several options (of hard- and software varieties) in between. It is impossible to say with any certainty from this distance away.

Additional info on the drive malfunction
I put in a disk and the computer will not accept it , it just sits there sticking out. No there isn't any other disk in there. Thanks for not harangueing me over the Mac mislabel. the material I was copying was personal not copyrighted( no violations here). I went to the ATA bus and everything appears to be there. How do I check to see if it disconnected?
thx

So this is a slot-loading optical drive (such as found on a PowerBook, a mini or (some) iMacs?

Odd behavior..

Can you see into the slot? Is there something physically blocking the drive's opening? Is there a pinhole near the drive's slot? If so, this is used to physically eject a disk that is stuck in a drive (for whatever reason). If this hole exists try inserting the end of a straightened paper clip and seeing if the eject mechanism will release (even though there's not disk there).
