ClamXav is probably the best free alternative you'll find. Be aware this is antivirus, not anti-spyware software. If there is spyware for the Mac OS I've not found it. This is not to say it doesn't exist, but rather that I, in my extensive travels on the World Wide Web, have never come across anything Mac-compatible.
Whatever you do,
avoid anything with "Norton" in the name if you're running Mac OS X.

The compatibility or effectiveness with Mac OS will be precisely zero. It's like diesel fuel in a gasoline engine. It just won't work. Okay, it's not
quite like that, in that Windows software won't gum up the inner workings of your Mac. It just won't work. But you get the idea.
