MAC OSX 10.3 Problem with downloads
I'm new - so bear with me. A few months ago the hard drive in my PowerPC crashed. I had it repaired at an authorized repair shop. When I got it back, my Limwire was disabled and now I can not even download another copy. Also, Netscape wont download either. I use Safari regularly, but I need Netscape to access some files on campus.

Actually, I should clarify - the files download OK and they seem to monunt OK. But they wont install. The install window actually closes automatically.

Any idea why Limewire was blocked? Can I un block it so I can download a new version?

Thanks.

You won't get any help with Limewire here, as peer-to-peer networking applications and piracy can go hand-in-hand. Don't misunderstand me, I'm not accusing you of anything. I'm just saying that because of the (great) potential for misuse in the form of violation of federal and international law via this application you won't find any people here who are willing to put their IP addresses (and, thereby, their necks) who are willing to take a leap of faith.

Failures in installation usually mean the download was corrupted, via whatever means. That's about as much as I'm willing to say. Just out of curiosity, have you had problems with other downloaded applications from other sources?

Not getting into the copyright arguments of peer-to-peer software, you may have a system permissions problem. First, make sure your computer account has Admin privileges (the shop may have changed that accidentally), because this could prevent you from installing software. Also have your disk utility run the "repair permissions" on the hard drive. It could take a long time though.

After those steps, reboot and then see if you can install your legally obtained software.

You may also want to try reinstalling your last System Update from Apple's download site. Search for the Combo (standalone) updater with the same number as yours (See 'About this Mac', top left menu on your screen). Don't use the delta updater, which is not so reliable. Be sure to check the info on the Apple site about using the Combo updater, in case there are particular issues. Then repair disk permissions again, using Disk Utility. This should sort out any problems installing any new software (as long as it's not corrupt).
