Linux on Mac?
I have a relative with a 4-6 year old powerbook. He can't do many things becuase he doesn't have the latest applications - they're all made for OS X.

He thinks OS X would run too slow on his G3 powerbook. I suggested Linux. Anyone here try Linux on a G3 Mac? If so, how did it work?

I found it to be rather slow and clunky on a PC.

Which G3 PowerBook? Lombard? Pismo? Wallstreet? I ask because OS X can run on those earlier models, and run well in the case of the Pismo.

I have read that 10.3 (Panther) is the latest version that should be run on a Pismo. At least that's what this article in LowEndMac says.

As far as the Lombard and Wallstreet, the highest supported version is 10.2 (Jaguar).

If you are still interested in Linux, I have tried Ubuntu 5.10 on a 600 MHz G3 iBook and found it very usable, but inferior to OS X for my needs.

Hope this helps.

It is a lombard. He thinks it is around 330 Mhz. Could you run OS X on that? He thinks it would be pretty slow.

I've run Jaguar (10.2) on a 600 MHz iBook with 640 Mb RAM. It ran very well. The key is memory. If your friend has 512 Mb or even 256 Mb, I'd give it a try.

Jaguar can be had for $20 here:
