Red face Installation Extensions
What are the installation extensions for a Mac? I know that *.exe is for windows, but this program should load up on this computer too, if I could just remember what the extension I need to find is called, and then locate a program that is supposed to open it, all would be great.

*.dmg merely means the file is a disk image (in the pre-OS X environment these files were known as *.img files). It is nothing more than a file that will mount as though it were a disk. The files contained on that disk image may, or may not, be "installer" files (typically, these "installer" files end with a .pkg extension in Mac OS X). They may also be any other kinds of files. They can just as easily be *.jpg files, Word docs, MIDI files, or anything else as they can any other kind of file. Some other host application may be required to access what lies inside. And there are third-party applications whose only purpose is to install files in various places on your computer. Installers created by (or using the method created by) the Vise company have existed for as long as I can remember. And other developers have created their own installation processes. There simply isn't one answer to your question.

For whatever it's worth, *.exe merely means the file is an executable archive. This also does not, in and of itself, denote an installer. All it means is that there are some sorts of files within a shell that is, in and of itself, an application of sorts. That is to say no other application is needed to make the file do what its creator desired. The files contained in this archive, like a *.dmg file on the Mac, may, or may not, be "installer" files (setup files, as they are typically called [and, often, these themselves are *.exe files]). They may also be any other kinds of files. They can just as easily be *.jpg files, Word docs, MIDI files, or anything else as they can any other kind of file. Some other host application may be required to access what lies inside.

No, this doesn't really help you. But I think you may be on an errant quest. I don't think the answer you seek will assit you in the situation in which you find yourself.

Perhaps if you gave more details about the file/files/application you're trying to install you would receive more concrete help for your exact situation, rather than having us tilting at windmills.

Every program I've installed so far is dmg as well, but then, I haven't installed very much stuff. BTW, the program I tried to use, it won't work on Mac after all, which I had to call customer service to find out. Oh well.....this is supposed to be my school computer anyway, so I guess it works out for the best that "work" stuff doesn't go on here. So thanks for trying to help me...guess it just wasn't meant to be...

Clarification: Every program you've installed so far has been housed in a .dmg shell. The .dmg is merely the delivery method, the same as a floppy disk, CD-ROM, DVD, et cetera. There is zero chance that the installer application is a .dmg. I don't point this out for any reason other than education, mind you. Because you asked the question I want to make certain you understand the answer.

That is what I suspected. Thanks for the update, though.
