Question MAC OSX - newbie
Yikes !!

Hub has MAC OSX Version 10.3 (7B85) 800 MHZ processor

256 MBmemory

Is downloading MAC update and it's taking billions of years to do it.

We still have dial-up but it's much slower than my pc.

Cleared cache and it still runs slow.

Is it the 256 MB memory causing it to be so slow?

Computer says update is about 117 MB.

Downloads for a while then, it logs off, saying we need permission to use temp file for download. Permission from who? Hub's name is the only one on the machine.

Would it be easier to buy a new cd and start from scratch? (He only used it a few times in the past few years; it's like new.)

I'lm totally unfamiliar with MAC. Books he bought don't give a clue. Anyone have suggestion for good, easy to understand book?

Oh, also, computer sometimes forgets the password. Is there a way to set it so he won't need a password?

Thank you. ST

800 MHZ is very slow, by today's standards (PC's processor faster than 800 MHZ?). And 117 MB will take a while to download, on dialup. OSX isn't running that well with 256 MB of ram either. I think 512 MB is the minimum, to get a decent operating speed, from OSX. 1 GB would be even better.
Don't know about password, but I guess there should be a way............
Good luck!

I think your problem is with the dialup, that file will take ages at 3k a second.

Do you have anything on your computer that you don't mind losing? because maybe you should just re-format and re-install os X (that should fix most of your speed problems) more ram NEVER hurts.

For about 20 dollars a month you can get high speed internet that not only doesn't clog up the phone line, but it lets you download WAAY faster.

Smile High speed for $20 a month? Where?
Thank you All.

All I've seen in my area (S. Philly) is $40+ a month. Have to keep expenses down.

We don't do anything fancy, just email and a website for $179 a year total. My desktop speed is fine w/512 mb except it takes a while for videos but they are rare.

Update finally downloaded and it's working fine but slow. (Left it on all night).

Guess I'll increase the memory...after I find a place to buy it.

http://comcastspecial.com/ they seem to portray it as around 20 dollars a month for high speed (not SUPER fast but much faster than dial up)

Is your computer a G4? or a G3? if its a G4...with the additional ram you can get a processor upgrade:
