Possible software for accessing wesites.
Hello everybody, I am from the Windows world. In the grand scheme of things I know about 1/100% about MACS.
Is there a plugin or program that MAC Users can use to access Internet websites that require Internet Explorer by windows?

You really shouldn't have problems using Safari or Firefox to access any site, but if you need IE I suggest downloading it for mac. More often than a browser problem you'll have a plug-in problem that will prevent you from viewing content. Apple plug-ins tend to be about 3-6 weeks behind windows plug-ins unfortunately. There is no emulator otherwise.

Dude, this is seriously bad information. IE for Mac hasn't been updated since June of 2003. It is a dead product. There is no more reason to download it than there is reason to download Windows 3.1. It's dead. No development has taken place. Move along. There are other, better things to use.

At least this isn't bad information.

From what source do you pull this figure?

Emulator? Of what? Why not just use one of the other browsers available, such as Firefox or Opera? I've never had any trouble with any filetype I've tried to download/view using some combination of the most recent plug-ins and these browsers.

It is far better to provide no information than to provide bad information.

It's not bad information. It's doesn't hurt to have a copy of IE to supplement Safari and Firefox. There are a few sites that only work with IE so it's useful to have it laying around as a secondary tool.

For someone critiquing the provision of information, you didn't bring much to the table.

Name one of those sites you cite. Please. Just name one site that mandates I use abandoned, four-years-outdated software to access it. Just one. I'll give you a shiny new nickel if you can do so.

for two years WebCT mandated it for Georgia Tech college students. I'm sure there are others.

More info- We have a website that Firefox does not work with. It's a IE only website.
So is there a program that they can use or a plugin?

Have you tried IE itself on the mac?

You can make that nickel payable to JackAndCoke or a charity of your choice.

And for 60 years, 4 months, 2 days, from the date GT opened its doors until ENIAC was unveiled, Georgia Tech likely said, "Computer? What's a computer?"

I asked for a site that mandates I use software that has not been updated since June of 2003 to access its services. You have not provided such.

Yes. I've been using Macs since 1984. I've used every browser that has presented itself for use. Some were good. Some were slow. Some were bloated. Some were lithe and limber. But what difference does that make? IE is old software, and it is not supported, as it was left to languish, by many contemporary standards. Back when IE was a viable option on the Mac OS I also used Mosaic, and it proved far more speedy and useful than IE. I don't know what my web browsing history has to do with this, though.

I'll wait until you can provide what is requested. But, rest assured, if you can provide me such a web site, and I can not make it work with Safari, Opera, Firefox or Camino, I'll make a donation greater than a nickel to a charity such as Las Vegas' Opportunity Village. If this one is not to your liking I'll choose another.

What is this web site? Can you provide a URL?

Whatever it is, this web site is employing what is called "browser sniffing code" which looks to see what browser you're using, and if it's not what the web site is programmed to accept it will say you cannot use whatever browser you're using and should select another. In most cases the threat is empty, as there is nothing that the web site is requiring which is not supported by HTML, DHTML, etc. that cannot be handled by the browser in question. In many cases it simply comes down to a matter of programmer snobbery or a fear of liability should something not work the way it's "supposed" to.

In the interim, there are applications which will enable Safari to "appear" as whatever "user agent" is supported by the web site which may well do the trick. Safari Enhancer is one of these, but there are others around.

You also might try Opera or Camino to access this site.

I haven't used IE since the late 1990s, and have not missed it at all. I've never come across a web site which I couldn't make work with another browser. But I hold out the possibility that one does exist. And, hence, my offer of a nickel, which has been raised and called by my esteemed colleague above. Should I lose this hand I will gladly fork over my share of the pot.

webct.gatech.edu was the website that required the use of IE until 2006 when it accepted Firefox. WebCt is a common collaborative website for students nationally. I'm not saying that espn.go.com requires IE, I'm just saying there are sites out there that have problems running on other browsers.

I was asking Drew if he had tried using IE on his computer for the site.

I'll quote from GT's WebCT page:

My apologies.

I'll still make that donation in the name of "JackAndCoke" (but, as a Tennessean [I know, my name says Vegas, but I'm a Tennessean as far as time spent in any one place goes], I have to complain that this is a huge waste of both Jack and Coke--each should be drunk straight, and should be until one is straight drunk--kidding, on the latter drunk part). Maybe I'll just make the donation under the name of Tech Support Guy Forums, Mac Division.

Oy.

Okay...

MAC 10 is a highly compact, blowback operated, selective fire machine pistol. That has little bearing on what you're needing, I suspect.

Mac OS X is an operating system. And Safari is installed alongside Mac OS X when the OS is installed.

It is not "built into" Mac OS X, largely because of a federal antitrust lawsuit against Microsoft by the government of the United States regarding their integration of Internet Explorer into the Windows operating system.

Opera and Camino are other browser alternatives to Safari, Firefox, Internet Explorer, etc. They are available for download from the Internet: Opera; Camino.

They may solve your problems. You may have to install plug-ins to make any of these browsers, IE circa 2003 included, functional in today's environs. In addition, there are applications you can download which will enhance the operational capacities of these applications. For example, Safari Expander will enable Safari to do some extra things, and be able to "fool" "browser sniffing code" into thinking it's something other than it is.

Don't worry about the particulars. Just find something that works for what you need. Oh, and when you do find a site that claims to be noncompliant with Firefox and/or Safari, you should shoot off an email to the site administrator(s) saying that you're a Firefox and/or Safari user, and part of an ever-growing number thereof, who would love to be able to access their site's offerings from within Firefox and/or Safari. Always pose it in a positive manner. If you get a less-than-friendly reply you should tell them that their choice may cause you to rethink yours.

Sorry- MAC 10= MAC OS X (didn't know it wasn't backward compatitable)

So Where would I get these plug-ins?
Does Safari typically recognize the sites normally?
