Ahoyhoy.

I have an imac and an ibook at home. The imac is shares dial up internet (shh) access with the ibook via the magic of Airport Extreme. I never bought a router because the airport cards were sufficient.

However, after updating my ibook with whatever Apple prompted me to download (crap like updating airport, itunes etc) my ibook can no longer load anything from the internet despite both computers still recognising each other on the network and despite connection being 100%. The imac hasn't been updated 100% yet and is thus - still fine. I'm holding off updating it as I don't know whether or not it will screw up the net.

Anyway both computers run mac osx 10.3.9 and obviously there are no error messages because my ibook thinks it's in tip top shape *kicks ibook*.

I saw a similar thread on the mac support forums but I don't have a log in and the thread had no useful solutions posted in it anyway.

Help? - I've repaired all disc permissions to no avail.

doesn't sound like a disc permissions thing. it sounds like when you updated and then restarted it reset your network settings. the internet sharing can be tricky sometimes too.

first thing i would do is check the sharing settings on both, and make sure they're how you want them, and make sure your imac is sharing your internet via your airport.

maybe try connecting the two computers with an ethernet cable. restart the ibook while the internet is *cough cough* dialed up, :P and see if you can get internet on your ibook when it boots up again.

you might also need to change your connection order in your network preferences, and make sure internet sharing is still on with both computers. on your ibook, go to your network preferences, and click the menu next to "show" and click on "network port configurations". you'll want to move "airport" to the top. do the same on your imac, but make sure "internal modem" is on the top, and "airport" is below it. you always want the one that gives you internet on the top and anything else below it.

once you got that, restart your ibook. have your internet ready and waiting for it as it logs you in.
