Troubleshooting connecting Macintosh to PC network
I'm using Dave 6.0 to help me connect my Mac running 9.2.1 with my PC wireless and wired router. At one time this connection worked but doesn't work any more. This is what I've done so far to troubleshoot the connection:
1. Checked both end of the wire connecting the Mac to the wired part of the Router. The light is lit on both ends. Also the cable is okay; it's one using successfully with my PC connection.
2. Tried pinging the connection with OTTool1.2.1. I get no response.
3. Enabled the netbios on my PC, turned off "browse services" in the Dave Client, and added the net bios name in the Dave Client When I click on the netbios name, I get the message "A netbios error has occured."
4. Tried putting various variations of my IP address including the IP address of my PC and one number below or above that address. My PC operates on DHCP, but when I use that option the IP address is not even remotely similar to my PC IP.
A related problem is that the TC/IP control panel will no longer open up. When I click on it, the computer freezes up. For awhile it was working when I disabled the Netbios networking and turned Dave file sharing off, this control panel would open up, but that tactic doesn't seem to work any more.
I read somewhere on the internet that if the netbios name is used, the IP number isn't used anyway. Is that true?

If anyone is familiar with Dave or networking MAcs and PC, and has any suggestions for making this connection, I would appreciate your help. I also could use some help getting the TC/IP panel to open up again.
Thanks,
VJD

Sounds like the underlying network setup is incorrect and thus preventing Dave or any other network application from working. You need to get your IP addresses sorted out first so that they can talk to one another (PING at least).
On which computer is the TCP/IP freezing? PC or Mac side? If that is not working, then I suggest working on that first before worrying about Netbios, Dave etc.

Mac now connected to Network!
You were right about the Mac part of the network not being set up right. The TCP/IP on the Mac was freezing up, preventing me from changing the settings. I downloaded Tech Tool Light and used it to rebuild my Mac desktop. I also went into Extension Manager and turned off all the Dave panels and extensions. TCP/IP would then open up. I reset it to DHCP and happened to notice that there were 4 different settings for the network card. I changed it from "Ethernet build in" to "Ethernet Slot B1." When I reset the extensions and control panels and rebooted the Mac, I found that it was connecting to my PC network. I have it set to connect to the Netbios name of the PC desktop, so it only wants to share files with that computer, but that's really all I need. The computer is still giving me netbios error messages but I can live with that as long as the two computers are communicating.

Thanks,
VJD
