OpenOffice 3 beta: Anyone here gonna try it?
I ask based on the following which is in the beta announcement:

Quote:
OpenOffice.org 3.0 will be the first version to run on Mac OS X without X11, with the look and feel of any other Aqua application. It introduces partial VBA support to this platform. In addition, OpenOffice.org 3.0 integrates well with the Mac OS X accessibility APIs, and thus offers better accessibility support than many other Mac OS X applications.
I've used OO 2.x on OS X and have seen screenshots of the native Aqua development version but I never played with it. Anyone here going to try out OO 3b on OS X to see how the Aqua integration works and feels?

Peace...

I think I'll wait and see what happens before installing this. No need to fix what isn't broken. The aesthetics of the program matter little to me, it's the function that is important. Perhaps these Mac OS X accessibility APIs will make that better, but, to be totally honest, I don't have a clue what that means. Open Office does what I need it to do: allow me to compose, save (in compatible formats), and print with little difficulty, at a price far, far less than that asked by Microsoft.

In about a month I'll be across the lake from Steve Balmer's place. If anybody has any messages they would like me to shout out to his estate I'll be happy to do so!

I hear you on that.

I'm the same way.

I'm thinking due to OO currently running as a X app, it doesn't support accessibility functions (like for disabled people) as well as native OS X Aqua apps.

Do you mean other than expletives?

I had downloaded a pre-Beta of OO 3.0 and found it much better than 2.4 Then when the beta came out officially, I immediately downloaded it. I have used it to open and edit MS Word files, and everything seems to work fine, as long as I save it back to Word format and not go to .odt. I also previewed an Excel file with many formulas and it seemed to work fine.

From my limited experience with it, I will definitely use it more.

But OO 3.0 Beta is Aqua, not X Windows.

I know, I was referring to the currently available GA release (2.x).

Since I rely mainly on Word and Pages, I will definitely try this out. It'll mainly be a competition between OO3 and NeoOffice, which I already have. We'll see which turns out to be better - I'm just glad they're getting away from X11!

I love iWork too much to try using anything else. I can't let it go, not even for a second!

Talk about an Apple addict.

I likely have those pretty well covered, but, just in case you can come up with some that I've not yet been familiarized with, feel free to PM me!

Seattle, here I come! Well, in about three weeks.

Frankly, I'm more excited about being near the Oberto jerky outlet than I am about being anywhere near those types.

Maybe you can give him the URL of the "Microsoft sucks" thread in Civilized Debate. Maybe he'll register and join the discussion!

Have a safe and fun trip.

Peace..

He won't be able to hear me over his helicopter (which has to land on the lake on a helipad he had specially built because his neighbors didn't want him landing on the land--they have no control over the water!). It's pretty cool to see it come in, land on the pad, and then be reeled in (or whatever it is that happens-couldn't get close enough to see for certain last time I was there).

But I'll do my best.
