mac e mail wheel of death

Hi All; I have been using the mac mailer for some time now and its great. I use smart mail boxes for my groupos etc and the links with the address book are great. But recently everytime I go to manually add an address or select one, the coloured wheel of death arises for a minute or so, and then the drop down menue appears. Its fine to add from address book. I have done the rebuild thing. Any suggestions please.
