Build a Bootable Rescue SD Card For Your Mac
Build a Bootable Rescue SD Card For Your Mac.

Quote:
For the hardcore users out there, Apple decided to give the SD port super powers -- you can use it to build a bootable SD card. That bootable card can then become an awesome tool for performing emergency hard drive repairs, data recovery, recovering deleted files, and much more. This how-to will get you started on building your SD card offering you a few ideas along the way, but potential uses for this SD card are practically unlimited.

Couldn't you also do this with any Mac as long as you have an external SD card reader?

Hi namenotfound,

If you have a Mac w/an external SD card reader - give it a try and let us know whether it worked or not.

It the other kind of Mac has at least an SD port, then its likely it would also work is my guess.

Just read the article, and yes, it works just the same for USB sticks or drives, and 1394 drives.

You can also make a USB stick copy of your OS X install DVD (which has several diagnostic apps on there, though not much admittedly) that you could use to install or re-install a MacBook Air for example, as this doesn't have a drive. Just plug in both the stick and the DVD, open Disk Utility and click on your USB stick. In the tab to the right, go to restore and drag the install disk to the source field and select the stick as the destination, then just click restore... Alternatively you could image the DVD as a dmg in Toast and use this to 'restore' the stick.

Plug the stick in and power up the Mac holding down Option to show boot options.
