how do i put linux on an imac or format it?
anyone know? i lost the mac software

how do i boot up with a cd?

its a 1999 i mac i guess 192 ram and 6 gig drive i think

can it be done?

OK, you are limited to the type of Linux distribution you can install, due to your older system/specs.

Check out PowerPC Linux at PenguinPPC.org. That's a good place to get started.

Also - Puppy Linux and Damn Small Linux are two distributions geared toward older systems.

i have dos for dummies edition 1999 with disc

but i still dont know how to get to cmos to make t book from a cd

thanks

and im curious also how to i change the hardrive if it failed

is it unsafe to open an imac?

Hello again: It was my understanding you wanted to install a distribution of Linux on your iMac?

It is not possible to install your copy of DOS onto your iMac because it does not have Intel-based hardware, which MS-DOS is required to run. (Your iMac is a PowerPC.)

Just to clarify too - DOS is a completely different operating system than Linux.

As far as replacing the hard drive in your iMac, see if this guide provides some insight.
