Have you tried running thru the Office XP setup again, and unselecting that particular 'feature.'

To resolve the problem, Microsoft said XP users should disable the Dictation and the Voice Command features on the operating system's Language bar. Alternately, users can turn off speech recognition completely from the Regional and Language Options tool on XP's Control Panel.

Also found this at another site.

And MS:

Thanks, problem solved.
The language bar now remains permanently on my desktop and so long as the microphone is turned off sapisrv.exe does not start.

Ultimately, what did you end up having to do? We may as well have the complete follow-up here, so that we google search to a resolution

I bought the language bar onto my desktop.
(control panel>text services>language bar and ticked "Show the language bar on the desktop")
It has a button to turn the microphone on/off.
So, I turn the microphone on when speech recognition is being used, else it is off and sapisrv.exe does not run.

This was as per the link you had posted.

Ok, thanks for your update, it may come up again in the future, and I want to archive this.
