Version 8 = Word 97
Version 9 = Word 2000

Just so ya know.

Restart your PC so I know you're at a good place.

Hit Start-Run and type:

winword.exe /regserver

Let me know if that fixes the problem.

Something else I noticed that happened after I made the changes you requested, is that all the icons of the .doc files changed to a "W" icon (they had the generic windows flag icon before). Since I didn't change any settings, this seemed strange to me.

Back at the Office. Did what you said and it looks like that solved the problem. Wow! what a trip. You must get tired of working with us computer illiterates. Really appreciate having someplace to go for problems like this. I'm sure it won't be the last time.
A couple of last questions:
Any idea how this happened or ways to prevent it in the future?
Can I delete the .doc folder off my Desktop?

Your statement is enough to make me do it all over again 10 times.

None at all. Perhaps your normal.dot file became corrupt originally, and everything just fell apart from there.

Can I delete the .doc folder off my Desktop?

You bet.

Sorry, brumill. I obviously dropped the ball here.

You're saying RTE files, but you mean RTF files, right? I don't know what RTE files are. RTF files are rich text formatted documents. When you save as RTF, many Word processors are capable of opening it.

Let me know what's going on, okay?

Meanwhile, I'm going to unmark this as being SOLVED.

ok now
I checked the rtf files and now they open. Why they didn't before is a mystery but everything seems OK. Thanks for the follow up.

You bet. I think what I'm trying to do here is, for the purpose of later searches, confirming that we've got everything resolved...particularly on some fairly unique problems.

So thank you!!

The reason for the W on the icons (which is Word's logo icon) and the reason RTF files now open properly: when you did the /regserver thing, this re-registers Word. What this means is that, in a manner of speaking, Word runs and says to Windows "Okay, okay, so I'm gonna, okay, take over all the, okay, DOC and RTF files, okay?" And Windows says, "Okay already!"
