All other programs work fine. When I try to open Microsoft Word 97, I get an Illegal Operations Error. When I click on details it says:

WINWORD caused an invalid page fault in
module WINWORD.EXE at 0137:300804cf.

I haven't made any hardward or software changes recently. I have windows 98. Any ideas as to what could be causing this and how to fix it? I've researched it on google.com, etc. but was unable to find a solution.

Hi. With Word closed, try finding and renaming your normal.dot file to abnormal.dot.

The computer with the problem is my office computer, and I'm home right now. I'll try your suggestion on Monday.

Thanks for your help, much appreciated!

Didn't work:(
I tried renaming the normal.dot file to abnormal.dot, but it didn't work.

I also tried reinstalling word, still get same error message? Does anyone have any other ideas?

There is a lot about this error message when I do a search on it, but it's only people reporting the problem, I can't seem to find any solutions.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Cool I'm very sorry!
Yours was the first post I wanted to reply to this morning. I didn't feel up to it yet, and when I came back later, I forgot all about it. I use the "new posts" link so I passed it right by all day long.

I'm going to send you an email document that talks about hard drive maintenance. Take the steps in there. If that doesn't work, keep going with the steps here.

On a fresh restart, hit Start-Run and type regedit and hit enter.

Browse to this folder:

hkey_current_user\software\microsoft\office\8.0\word

Right-click the Word folder and rename it to OldWord.

If that doesn't work, you're going to need to completely remove Office using a program called Eraser 97, and then reinstall it.

You let me know if we need to do the last, I'll help you get that program.

Thanks
When I receive your e-mail, I'll definitely give it a try. I won't have time until Friday, but I'll post a message to let you know how it went after that.

Thanks very much for your help.

Cool Doh!
I keep forgetting we don't see the email addresses anymore and the on-line email doesn't give me the option to attach a file. Please email me for it, okay? It's called Hard Drive Maintenance.

Talking Thanks!
I just wanted to says thanks for helping me out. I went through the steps you sent me on hard drive maintenance. Although it did not fix Microsoft Word, it was still a good thing to do. What did fix Word, however, was your second suggestion about editing the registry to rename Word to OldWord, that did the trick. Microsoft Word now opens fine, not annoying illegal operation message.

Thanks so much, you help was much appreciated
