Hi.
At work, we are connected over a LAN, and we all have MS Outlook for e-mail through a router. As I understand it, our connection is not constantly open, so the router dials every time one of us uses Outlook.
There a few little glitches with this system - sometimes it is unable to open a folder (Inbox, Sent Items etc) the first time and you have to retry.
But the one thing that really annoys me is the appearance of the columns in the Sent Items folder.
I have alligned and renamed all columns to my preferance, which includes the removal of the FLag Status column.
However, no matter how many times I remove it, it reappears.
I guess its a default column for that folder, but why won't it stay away when its deleted?

Very minor point, I know, but it is entirely useless to me and all my other column formats have worked.

Cool Hiya, Gram! Welcome to TSG!
I see you found a different use for our site here...

This sounds like a permissions issue to me. Are you sure you have permission to "write to the registry", which is what changing the views will do?

What happens if you hit Start-Run and type regedit and hit enter? Does it let you into the registry or does it tell you something like "access denied"? If access is denied, it'd be a pretty good sign that you don't have rights and that's why the change won't keep in your registry.

Hi Dreamboat!
Yeah, we never had the internet at work until very recently, so I've got all these questions stocked up!

If the 'registry' info is stored on my PC, then I am effectively the site supervisor and have the supervisors password for all the PCs.

If it is stored on the server, then I certainly won't have permission - this is at Head Office, and they wouldn't let me anywhere near it. they use PC Anywhere to change any settings we have.

I recently attemted to install a modem for internet access on one of the PCs here and it compromised the whole network, which Head Office weren't very happy about...

Cheers,
Gram

Cool Here's what I do know...
When you get a PC at work, the techie-types usually log themselves in as Administrator and set things like the permission that Gram can have on this PC; is he allowed to change this file, that file, the other file; is what he does allowed to result in a change to this file, that file, the other file, blah, blah; okay, we'll let him change this setting, but when Windows shuts down and tries to write the changes to the registry, we're going to say no, we're not even gonna warn Gram, we're just going to confuse the heck out of him....

So I think you have an idea now. Registry info is, in fact, stored on your PC, but unless you log in as the adminstrator, you may not have write rights...get it?

If you aren't allowed to install a modem, I wouldn't be surprised if you're not allowed to change your Outlook views. That is stretching it, though. You tell them that a global support helpdesk employee that does software support (for alot bigger company's than yours) said that's just a bit stringent! Hee hee!

Thanks again Dreamboat.
I'll try logging in as the supervisor at work tomorrow and start changing things around!

That'll learn 'em.

Oh, by the way, would there be any reason why logging on as the supervisor slows things down a bit (such as Outlook opening from Startup)? It might be just that the network was playing up.

Well, that part is always true when you're on a network--mail server or otherwise. You just try your best to compare your connection (and lag time) with another user who ought to be similar to you.

one more suggestion...
Try this: View, Current View, Define Views, click on messages (or Sent To)and then the modify button. Is that where you changed the view? This will hopefully be a more permanent solution.

flags, flags, flags
Hello.

I tried the 'define views' thing yesterday afternoon, and JimiT's post just confirmed that I was on the right track.
It seems to have worked.

Turns out that I don't have the administrator level log on, but I do know the supervisor's BIOS passwords for all the PCs in here.

Cheers everyone,
Gram

Not too shabby, Dreamboat!
I've got to say, I'm very impressed with the site and the speed with which solutions come through is great.

I thought the access-programmers site was useful, but the replies to problems can be a little sparse. Here, on the other hand, you send a problem and go back the nect day and there's half a dozen replies.

So, yeah, well done to all involved. I've told my mates about the site, but carefully neglected to tell my superiors at work!
