I am using Office 2000 Premium with Win98SE. My default language in MSWord and in the Windows regional settings is set to English Canadian (because I'm in Canada). My problem is this......As I'm typing in Word, the spell checker randomly switches to French Canadian in mid-sentence thereby giving me all sorts of "spelling errors" based on the French language.
I have checked and double checked all my language settings to make sure I don't have "French Canadian" set somewhere and I don't. All my settings are for English. I have no idea why it suddenly switches to French all by itself. Anyone have any ideas or do I need a priest to come in and says a few words over my computer? By the way, this happens every time I use Word. I keep changing the default language back to English and then all of a sudden...BOOM!....it switched to French again.

Totally frustrated here
Thanks in advance

This may work
Don,
I would try:
Tools, Language, Set Language, there is an option at the bottom to detect language automatically. Try unchecking it.

I haven't had much luck with this feature working correctly, but it sounds like it may be changing the language on you.

Cool Hi Don.
Are you getting your text from elsewhere? Perhaps pasting in little snippets from other documents? They could be bringing the language with it. The moment this starts happening, hit ctlr-a and hit Tools-Language-Set language and set to desired. Does it stop?

If I tell you why this happens, perhaps it will shed some light?

The language setting can be stored in a style or in text pasted from another document or any number of places...

Let's suppose that at some point you used French Canadian language and somehow set it so that it got into your normal.dot (default template) file. Well, it could still be there. And let's suppose it got stored in normal.dot as part of Heading 2 style. And let's further suppose that you use autoformatting (Tools-Autocorrect-Autoformat as you type and you've got headings selected). Now, for instance, whenever you type something that Word decides ought to be heading 2 style, you suddenly get french canadian!

So, close Word. Rename your normal.dot file to abnormal.dot. Launch Word, turn off autocorrect stuff for headings (I like to remove all the checkmarks from the top and bottom sections of that dialog box). Now, go to Tools-Language-Set language, pick the proper language and hit the Default and hit OK. And try again.

Hope it helps!

Cool Don posted elsewhere:
Thanks to "JimiT", my problem with Word reverting to French Canadian language in mid-sentence has been solved. Here is his solution:

Thanks again JimiT !! :-))

[Don, moderators like to change the problem to solved ourselves. Heck, it's all we do around here! Don't take our jobs! Actually, we like to keep the problem and the resolution in one place so that people find it when they do a search. I'm going to delete your other thread. JimiT is a one of the only people here that I know personally--and I still think he's a great guy!]
