My pc crashed while downloading my email and now I can't run Outlook 2000. When I click on the icon, the title box appears onscreen then hangs. I'm forced to do an "end-task".
I've tried reinstalling to no avail. All my other MSOffice apps are fine.

Any HELP!?!?!?! I need my contact list !?!?!?!

POP Mail
I'm not sure exactly how you go about doing it, but you could try accessing your mail through a POPMail account by setting up a new Hotmail address and setting it up in their POP3 options. You should be able to access the new mail (and maybe some older messages) though I'm not sure about contact lists.

Hi, rphox.
Have someone send an email to cleanharddrive@home.com and it'll autoreply with instructions on how to clean up your hard drive.

Clean it up and run Outlook again. Let me know if it still doesn't work.

I mailed this to Dreamboat:

Thanks for the help. I followed the instructions to clean the hard drive and
even found someone else's help to run outlook in a "safe" mode. But the icon
still won't run, I have to run "Outlook /safe".
Any other suggestions?

BTW, I originally installed Office using Premium version from my wife's
start-up. I tried to uninstall but get prompted for the original disks but
as her start-up has since gone belly-up I can't uninstall. Could that be causing some of this?

She replied:

Which icon are you using to open Outlook? Do a Start-Find-Files or folders
and look for outlook.exe. When it is found, right-click it and hit Create
Shortcut. You'll be told it can't create one right there, would you like to
put it on the desktop instead, to which you should reply YES. Test the NEW
shortcut to see if it works.

If that works, is the malfunctioning icon a shortcut with an arrow on it? If
yes, delete it. If no, I'm not sure yet, will have to get back to you on
that one.

Whenever uninstalling Office 97 or Office 2000, you should use Eraser 97,
available at
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q176/8/23.ASP
or
Eraser 2000, available at
http://support.microsoft.com/support.../Q219/4/23.ASP

These can also be used, I believe, to uninstall when you do not have the
installation disks available.

Dreamboat,
I created a new icon which also did not run. The old icon does not have an arrow.

Again, thanks for your help.

Hi RPhox

I am moving your other post to this thread, please continue all replies here.

I TRIED THIS BUT SINCE I DON'T HAVE THE ORIGINAL SOFTWARE CD THAT THIS PROMPTS FOR, I CAN'T COMPLETE IT. SO I STILL CAN'T RUN OUTLOOK FROM THE ICON. ANY SUGGESTIONS.
Opening Outlook with the /safe command switch, loads Outlook without extensions, preview pane or toolbar customization.

Your .ecf error is due to an add-in.

What is the name of .ecf file giving the error, and what is the exact error message?

Have you tried removing the add-in, or renaming the .ecf file to .old?

I do not have Outlook 2000 installed, I can only give the Add-in Removal steps for Outlook 98.
Tools>Options>Other tab>Advanced Options>Add-In Manager. Clear the checkbox for the add-in you wish to remove.

Without the Office 2000 CD, you may not be able to reinstall the add-in, unless Microsoft offers it at their site.

Let us know what you find.

I don't remember the exact name of the file but I solved the problem by copying the file from a Standard disk (I have Premium version installed) and I no longer get the error message. But I still can't run Outlook from the icon. And you are right that I can no longer access the preview pane.

Any and all suggestions appreciated.

Please let us know what you have found and what you have tried to resolve your situation.

Try a repair on your .pst file
With Outlook closed
Start>Run, key in scanpst.exe
Click on scanpst.exe to start the Inbox Repair Tool.
Browse to your .pst file, click the Start button to start the scan. If errors are found the Inbox Repair Tool will repair the errors with your prompting.

If renaming your .ecf file or removing the add-in or running the Inbox Repair Tool, still does not allow Outlook to start normally, you might try creating a new profile.

For Corporate/Workgroup mode
Start>Settings>Control Panel>Mail>Remove the Personal Folders Service> Readd the Personal Folders Service, browse to your .pst file, OK your way out.
Try launching Outlook.

BTW what mode are you using?

Just got in the office? Good Grief! What time is it there?

Have you tried creating a new Outlook shortcut as circle suggested in the other thread?

What time is it here?!?! The question is what time is it there? Here it's 11 in the morning.

And yes I did create another icon as a shortcut which did not run.

Well, now it is 3:12am Monday morning

BTW, if you have access to an Office 2000 cd have you tried the Detect and Repair using that cd?

HAVE YOU EVER HEARD OF SLEEP?

When Detect and Repair prompted for the disc, I inserted my copy of Standard version and it wouldn't accept it. I am thinking about Dreamboat's advice to run Erase 2000 to try to get rid of the Premium installation but I'm afraid of losing my contacts and stored emails. I have Standard version cds for a reinstall.

Since you were unable to start with the safe switch (you will lose all of your rules if this works) - try this:

Rename c:\windows\application data\microsoft\outlook to outlook.old

The only thing that I can think of would be if one cd had a service release that the other did not. Since both the Standard and Premium contain Outlook 2000. Unless it is looking at the CD key...

If it comes to uninstalling
Do a Find>Files or folders for *.pst,*.pab
files. Depending on the size of the file you may be able to copy them to a zip disk or just move them to another directory to ensure the uninstall does not wipe them out.

After reinstalling Outlook 2000, it would be a simple matter of creating a profile and pointing it to your original .pst file.

Take a look at this thread and the link I posted there.
