Hello to All,

I'm having trouble modifying my Office 97 Pro installation. When I originally installed it I only installed selected components. Now I'd like to install Access but when I try (through the Add/Remove in Control Panel) I get a whole series of error messages (ie: Object 744: Set up files might be corrupt. Try installing from the same place you originally installed from) or something very similar to that. I haven't changed anything except maybe moved a few shortcuts around. There were approx 45 messages like that. If I can't install Access then I would like at least to uninstall Office and then reinstall the whole package. Any ideas???

My System: 200 mhz Pentium
72 mg ram
Office 98

Thanks in advance

In order to reinstall Office 97 you must do it with a clean install. Run the Office 97 eraser program and then install Office 97 again and I believe it will go in without any problems. The eraser program will clean out the registry and all files associated with Office 97 so you will be starting with a clean slate. You can download Eraser 97 at the following link. Follow the instructions and you will not have any problems.

Yes the eraser program is good and might help. But it does not remove ALL the unnecessary files. but the error message seem more like you did not install the file from a cd or the cd drive has been change. Office 97 is very picky about that. It is very strange. Once you install office and want to reinstall something it wants you to install it from where ever you orginally install it from (CD, network or what every)

Thanks for the replies. Just like you said Tim, The installation program was prompting me to install from the same location. The problem was I couldn't get the Office 97 install disc (CD) to run from either of my cdrom drives. I kept getting a mega-list of errors. Thanks to Rick I went to the Microsoft web site to d/l the eraser program. While I was there reading all the do's and don'ts regarding the eraser program (which by the way wants you to use the Office install disc to remove the application first, then it will try to remove whatever is left over) I came across what turned out to be the real problem. When I first installed Office I also installed the SR1 and SR2 patch. Then I uninstalled a couple of Offices' components and never reinstalled the patches. What I ended up with was what Microsoft calls a mixed install. Until I reinstalled the patches I could not remove/install Office or any of its components. Now that the patches are reinstalled I was able to reinstall Access which was the prime objective to begin with. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

ps: pretty long winded post, eh?
