I'm running Win98 with Office '97 on a Dell XPS D300. Whenever I open Word for the first time and I start typing away it will freeze up. I get two GPF Errors. The first being WINWORD caused a GPF in module GDI.EXE and I'll click on ignore or close (it really doesn't matter at this point)and another will come up as a MSIMN GPF in module GDI.EXE. At this point I'll have to press the reset button on my pc to reboot and once it reboots all will be fine.
I've done the renaming of the NORMAL.dot file and deleting it after renaming it. I've also tried reinstalling Word but to no avail. I've read in this site something about corrupted files but I don't know which ones may be corrupt or how to go about replacing them.
This has become a real pain because I always have to reboot after I start a document. Can anyone please help?
Thanks so much,
Peter

alamal, I don't think you have a corrupt doc.

There's an issue with that gdi.exe. I had the problem once and don't recall the fix, but found this:

Alamal,

If Dreamboats reference does not fix it you might try the following. The GDI.exe error is usually associated with printing and printer drivers but the same file is used for the screen display.

Right click on My Computer
Select Properties.
Click on the Performance tab.
Click on the Graphics button.
On the next screen the Hardware Acceleration arrow is
set to full by default. Move it two notches to the left
and reboot. This changes the ratio of Hardware/Software
used for your video display.
If it works you can try moving the setting up a notch.

Regards,
Roger

Hi Dreamboat and rogers55. I looked into MSN's site that you suggested and it wasn't much help. That's only because it didn't really apply to my situation.
I also tried rogers fix and that didn't work either.
Now, the only time this happens is when I boot first thing after the pc sits overnight. Then, when I open a Word file, it may take a minute or a second but it WILL freeze up.
I did update the driver to my HP722C printer but I can't say whether this started happening around this time.
I really need some ideas as I have none.
Got anymore, anyone?
Thanks tons
Peter

One thing I didn't mention is that I'm running Win98 2nd edition. That's why Dreamboat's article didn't apply.

Alamal,

It looks like both MS Word and Outlook are getting the GPF and only on a cold boot.
Have you tried reinstalling your video drivers and also checking for an updated version?
You might also try using MSConfig to do a clean boot and see if something running in background is causing a problem.

OK, now we're gettin' somewhere! Hey Roger, running msconfig and unchecking some virus and scanner software items seems to have done the trick. This is my first cold boot and all is well. All I have to do is find the offending culprit and recheck each one by one.
Thanks, I'll post back when resolved.

If FindFast is in there, do NOT use it. It's worthless.

Findfast is a little program that comes with Office 97 and it sucks. It runs in the background and screws stuff up, and can keep your PC from shutting down properly. I know maybe 2 people out of all I ever "met" online that actually used it. I think, like a database, it indexes all the files you create in Office so that when you search for them (from the File-Open dialog box in an Office program), it finds them faster. Who ever uses that feature? Not me!

PROBLEM RESOLVED!!!!
Dreamboat, Roger, thanks again for all your help. It turned out that Inoculate anti virus was the culprit. I uninstalled it and everything is back to normal. This is my third cold boot.
Thanks so much.
God Bless
Peter
