I was just curious if there was any way to quietly log-onto the internet. You know that insipid noise you get to enjoy when your computer is dialing out?

Well, it depends on your modem and the way you connect to the internet.

In general - find the section for for settings for dialing out and add ATM0 to the init string for your modem. Or is is ATL0... ok, I can't remember - I think it is M though.

Most modems can be quite by the way Larry said, but if it does not work with the ATM0 (that is ZERO) then try just the M0 <--zero)

If your in Win95/98. Go to your modem properties. (Start/Settings/controlpanel/modem)

Around the middle area of the Modem window is a button called "PROPERTIES" - click it and there will be a slider for volume control.

Some modems may 1~3 levels of volume. Or ON or OFF.

Thank You Larry, Robert & Donovan
I have been to the volume slidebar under modems in the coontrol panel awhile ago...
I have an Aceropen FM56PVS 56000 modem.
I'm not sure why the sidebar does not affect (effect?) the ""volume" at all. And I'm happy with the results of adding the atm0 command....it works! I've asked at least a dozen people "how to..." most said can't if slidebar didn't work. At last Ive found a RELIABLE source of information. Thank you for your time. # 1 WEB PAGE.
