I've got an IDE Toshiba 32X and a SCSI Plexwriter 8/20 burner, and I can't get either one to initialize software that requires a CD (mostly games: Starcraft, Tribes, Phantom Menace). I can startup software off the hard drive just fine, but when a certain program requires a CD to startup I can't. The computer recognizes when a CD is inserted and I can even view the files on the CD from each device. When I first installed the burner I could run software off both just fine, but recently I took out 128 megs of memory and I've had the problem.

Do you mean your CDs don't auto start? Can you give us an example of what you mean exactly - it seems to me that if you can view the files on the CD, everything is ok... I am obviously missing something.

My software will autostart (the options menu will come up) but the program won't run. Any software that requires the CD won't work-but I can see all the files on the CD itself.

Sounds like a software conflict to me.

Are you running Win98? If so, go to Start, Run, and type in MSCONFIG. Turn off all startup files and reboot. Try a CD and let us know.

I have had a simalar problem. I can view a cd-rom in win explorer, but any time I try to run an executable from the cdrom (mainly install progs) it causes a GPF. This happens on both my SCSI and IDE cdroms. If I copy the contents of the cd-rom to my HDD everything runs ok. I'll try the msconfig, anything else I should look at?

One big culprid to this behaviour is a Temp folder that is nott being cleaned out ... Go to C:\Windows\Temp and remove ALL the files in there ...

Hope this helps ...

OK, I cleaned the temp folder, disabled everything in startup using msconfig and I'm still receiving GPF's. Heres part of the error code:
ISSET_SE caused a general protection fault
in module IS_SETUP.EXE at 0001:000032cc.

I recieve the same info for any cd. Anything else I can try?

I want the search function back! There have been previous posts about the IS_Setup problem, and I believe they had solutions. I don't recall what they were though... Hopefully someone else here will. I think it was in the Software forum, about 3 or 4 weeks ago, if you want to go manually hunting.

I will try to remember what it was all about...

Ok - check this out and see if it helps:

Thanks All,

disabling Norton AutoProtect did the trick. One more issue solved.

Great! Now, if I can just remember that for next time (since I can't search for it)...

I'll go ahead and close this one down.
