My problem deals with Hewlett Packard officeJet 570 (4 in 1).
I have a PC with Pentium II, 266 MHZ, 128 MB RAM, 6.4 GB HDD and Win 98SE.
Peripherals include OfficeJet 570 on LPT1, HP ScanJet 5200C on USB, Alaris Quick Video DVC1 camera on ECP Printer port- LPT2 .

Initially I had Win 98 and everything seemed to be working OK. For some minor trouble shooting the PC asked for the Win 98 disk. I had misplaced the disk some where. Since I had the Win 98SE , and I was planning on upgrading it anyway, I inserted that. During the installation, there was a power outage in my house for a few seconds. When I try to restart, I started to get error messages regarding the OfficeJet 570 ( can not recall exactly what) after the Win 98 SE was installed. I was unable to use the Printer. I could not use the HP installation CD to reinstall the printer. When I tried to use the CD, it said ‘OfficeJet series is already there and if I want I should uninstall and reinstall”. When I click the Remove option in the CD ,it will run and say it is removed. But when I start to reinstall, it will again say I have the Device already there and same prompting about uninstall-reinstall comes up. If I use Settings> Add/Remove and uninstall still during reinstallation same problem while using the Hp installation CD-ROM occurs . Finally I used Windows 98SE Disk to select the driver. for HP Office Jet as the default Printer and installed. Now printer is working . But I can not get color printing. I can not get the OfficeJet Manager help file/ trouble shooting guide on my desk top. Windows Help file says nothing about color printing or FAX or Copying. I can copy by clicking the Copy button on the Machine itself. I can not fax.. I can not use its scanner function. That is not critical for me as I have a color scanner as stated above.

My question is how can I uninstall and reinstall the HP officeJet 570 using the original software and have all its icons and help file restored. I have downloaded the latest driver from HP site to a Temporary download files. Can that be used to restore the functional capabilities. If so how. I have deleted all files thought to be HP OfficeJet using the Windows Explorer search and delete option but still I get the same message while trying to install the device using the CD.

I used to love this call when I supported those machines.
Head into the registry editor (start>run and type regedit then hit ok) go to the key "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Hewlett-Packard"
you should see an entry that says "SDD" (w/o the quotes) highlight this entry and hit delete. This key should disappear. close out of the registry editor and reboot. When you come back up you should be able to reinstall the OJ software.

Hi Josh,
I can not thank you enough for the prompt and correct diagnosis and appropriate treatment for my Printer ailment. I am extremely happy to report that my HPOJ 570 is alive and kicking after six months of partial paralysis.
Your instructions were very easy to understand and because of the clarity of instruction I had no fear to do the regedit . People like you and the very knowledgeable moderators and administrators of this forum make the site a place to check frequently for pearls of wisdom regarding many aspects of computer use.
Thanks again.
