Maybe, just maybe, I've solved it. Deep in the bowels of HP's web site, in a place I might never find again, there was a 10-page treatise on troubleshooting bi-directional printing problems. Some of their suggestions I had already tried. But along toward the bottom of page 4 there was a section titled "TWAIN FOLDERS". Here I found a suggestion to hunt for such, and rename any executables and/or folders I found within same; the list of offending folder names included one I recognized: PageScan. Sure enough, there was a PageScan folder in the TWAIN folder. I renamed it, rebooted, and now it appears that I can print. Whether this is a fluke or has cured the problem remains to be seen.

Not necessarily a fluke as scanners/TWAIN folders and associated software often conflict with printers...In fact, I am terribly sorry I did not think of something like that as I have run across same issues before many a time...Oh, well, I guess I've already forgotten more than half of what I thought I knew hehehehe...BOL...just hope you
don't need that PageScan...

Thanks for your help and your reassurance about TWAIN and scanner conflicts. I'm hoping the 3rd-party software (which I have yet to install) that came with the R60 will include apps that obviate a need for PageScan. My trusty old Logitech PageScan will go live with my trusty old Pentium I system, on somebody else's desk.
