Invariably, immediately after printing any document I get this blue screen error message:

"A fatal exception error occured at 0028:C029989F in VXD VWIN32(05) + 0000 23C7."

I've been to <a href="http://www.hp.com/cposupport/prodhome/lj6mp.html">HP's support site</a>, but they have no <a href="http://forum.support.hp.com:5050/cgi-bin/escforum/show?PIPSERVER=0&ROOT=53110&MSG=53110&T=main_lj_index">Community Support Forum</a> for the LaserJet 6 series, and I've found no reference to any other help in regard to this printer and this exact error message.

MS has this solution that seems irrelevant: <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/Q190/9/15.ASP">Q190915</a>

So I'm stuck, guys and gals.. any help would be appreciated.

This is a P300 with 32mb running a fresh installation of Win98SE and all PCI components.

I know HP (like Epson) has trouble with those
status monitor apps. that run in the background...Have you tried disabling that? (of course I don't know if your series has something like that or not, but maybe worth looking into)...

Have you tried switching to the LJ III drivers?

No, not LJ III, but I'm gonna try the <a href="http://www.hp.com/cposupport/printers/software/lj851en.exe.html">LJ 5 drivers</a> next..

I'll let you know..

OK, we have success ..finally!

After installing the lj851en driver, we had the same problem. Worse yet, I couldn't delete any printers (there ended up to be a few) from the Printers folder without getting a blue screen.

Then I got an email from <a href="http://support.microsoft.com/support/kb/articles/q252/4/14.asp">MS</a>, pointing to a problem caused by <a href="http://www.intuit.com/support/quicken/faqs/win3/5192.html">Quicken 2000</a> which results in the error message, "Fatal exception OE has occurred in VXD mrtRate (01)."

I still had problems after this fix ('another program using the printer port LPT1'), and finally cured all problems by going into Safe Mode, deleting all printers, using msconfig to eliminate most every running program (including HP's Printer Toolbox utility), and reinstalling the latest printer driver.

So this was a tough one, and I thought ya'll might want a record of how it was fixed.

Thanks for the update. I'll go ahead and archive this so all your work won't get lost.
