I'm running win98se w/ 850 athalon w/ 256 megs of ram.. while sitting quiet, the cpu is maxed out.. any ideas, becase I'm stumped

Are you running any cracking programs like Seti or RC5?

Anything like CPU cool or any other cpu monitoring devices.

Also get this program from here. http://www.helponthe.net/tsgbb/Forum14/HTML/000100.html

It works real good at showing what your system is doing.

way to go with that program.. it shows win32xi.exe using 97% of the cpu. I have no idea what it is but i'll soon find out.. thank you very very much

win32xi turned out to be a subseven trojan horse virus. windows wouldn't let me delete it, because it was active all the time. knowing the full path, I was able to delete it in dos. all is fine now. the program that Chris A pointed me to was a great help.
