Hello,

I've just purchased an Epson Perfection Photo 1200U scanner and I am having problems installing it. I have an AMD/800 with Win98SE system. Following the instructions to the letter, I unlocked the scanner, plugged the USB connectors to the scanner and back of the computer, plugged in the scanner, turned it on before turning the computer on. But after the computer booted up, it didn't find New Hardware. So I plugged it to my other USB port. This time, it found New Hardware but it said that "Windows has found a new hardware and it's location a software for it." Then it said "Windows is installing the software for your new hardware." It did this all by itself. Then took me back to my desktop without giving me the chance to install the driver from the CD. In Device Manager, under Universal Serial Bus controllers, I see an Unknown Device with an X on it. The properties for the Unknown Device state: Device Status, "This device is disabled (Code 22), Click Enable Device to enable device." (Enabling Device didn't help) and under Driver for this Unknown Device, it says that "No driver files are required or have been loaded for this service."

I have tried installing the drivers manually by using either Device Manager - Universal Serial Bus controllers - Unknown Device - Properties - Update Driver AND Control Panel - Add New Harware - Unknown Device. The Update Device Manager Wizard (through Add New Hardware) says that "This device is already installed, but it has a problem..." When I tried to install the driver manually, it didn't accept the driver files on the CD or the drivers I downloaded from the Epson website. It either says "The best driver Windows found is already installed for this device..." And the location of the driver shows as C:\WINDOWS\INF\USB.INF OR if I do it the "Have Disk" way, and show it the path to escanfb4.inf, it says "The specified location does not contain information about your hardware."

Sigh, this is my first time dealing with USB devices. I thought it would be easier than ever... Please help! Thank you!!!

Jessica

A note in case this info is important, in Device Manager - Universal Serial Bus controllers, there are three items listed: the Unknown Device, USB Root Hub, VIA Tech 3038 PCI to USB Universal Host Controller with no IRQ conflicts listed.
Also, I checked the Phoenix BIOS settings and it has the following settings for USB:
"Embedded USB2 Device" = Disabled
"Legacy USB Support" = Auto.
I don't have any other USB devices but I'm planning on getting an USB printer very soon.
I turned off my antivirus program during installation.

Well, something that wouldn't hurt to help is updating your chipset drivers. They can be found here. Just extract, run, and after the reboot, it'll update drivers for mobo components.

If that dosen't help, then tell us

Hi guys!

After trying EVERYTHING, the problem is finally solved. I will post what I did here. Hopefully someone who has the same problem will not have to go through with what I did.

My computer: AMD/800 by HP.
Scanner: Epson Perfection Photo 1200U

Problem:
- Can't install the driver.

Solution:
- Make sure to remove the Unknown Device in Device Manager.
- (Just in case, disable your Antivirus program and Crashguard)
- Turn your computer off.
- Your scanner should be plugged to your computer.
- Turn OFF your scanner (I know the manual says otherwise, but this worked)
- Turn computer on.
- After boot up, turn scanner ON and wait (takes a few secs) until you get the "Add New Hardware Wizard". It will say: "This wizard searches for new drivers for: Perfection 1200..." Then just follow the instructions of your manual and install the driver.

Note:
I've noticed that if I restart my computer with the scanner on, I will get the Unknown Device back in Device Manager. I have to remove it again and turn off the scanner, (wait 10 secs) and turn it back on. Wait a few secs again and check Device Manager. The scanner will be listed under Imaging Device again, as it should be. To avoid this, turn your scanner off before turning your computer on. Then just turn your scanner on and wait a few seconds before using it... sigh .. this sucks but as long as it works .... :/

Thanks for your help,

Jessica

Thanks for letting us know what worked.

I'll archive this for future reference.
