Win98SE,Actima 50x cd rom,HP8200i CDRW

All working fine until a few days ago. System booted up, in "my computer" both cd players were now removable disk icons. tried several different cds in both and when I try to explore the contents of either it says it's a blank cd. Reloaded the cd rom driver and now the icons are cd players again but still no data. Checked device manager, no conflicts, all looks normal. During boot-up the drives are detected. Removed both drives and reboot---same problem. Both players work in dos. I can actually copy a cd on-the-fly with Nero. Nero can read the contents of any cd in the burner. It cannot read the contents of either drive if I click on the drive icons within the program (acts like the disk is blank). Burned cd works fine in home cd player. The windows or the Creative PlayCenter cd players cannot access either drive (freeze). Other programs list the drives blank as well (no freeze).

Please HELP!

Have you run a full system virus scan?

What IDE controller are you using? You said no conflicts, but sometimes updating the IDE drivers can fix problems.

Larry,
Thanks for the reply. I downloaded the latest McAfee virus defs and did a "all files" scan---nothing. I tried to remove and reinstall the hard disk controllers, but was only able to do so with the bus master (VIA Bus Mster PCI IDE Controller). When I tried to remove the primary (dual fifo) and secondary (dual fifo) it said I had to remove the parent device first (Bus Master). I did remove the bus master first (in safe mode) but I still could not remove the other 2. When I reboot the Bus master is reloaded--catch 22--how is it done?

After reboot I checked the DM and under disk drives I had 4 (normally 2-floppy and HD). Removed all and rebooted. Now the orginal 2. CD devices now not accessible, checked drive letters, wrong, adjusted, reboot. Still not accessible but correct letters.

Looked up the .vxd flies that were needed for my software and renamed all the others in C:\windows\system\iosubsys to .vx

Reboot, still not working. One by one I renamed back to .vxd and I got lucky! Turns out I need the cdfs.vxd Now everything seems to work. Just for FYI these are the .vxd file I have "turned on";
apix.vxd
atapchng.vxd
cdfs.vxd
cdtsd.vxd
cdvsd.vxd
disktsd.vxd
diskvsd.vxd
nerocd95.vxd
torisan3.vxd
udfread.vxd
voltrack.vxd

The .vxd files I still have renamed to .vx are;
cdr4vsd.vx (Adaptec driver)
drvspacx.vx (Seagate back-up exec)
necatapi.vx (Driver for old NEC CDROM drives)
scsi1hlp.vx (Win95/98 driver required to play VideoCDs-conflicts with cdr4vsd.vxd)

I got the vxd info from the Nero website (www.ahead.de). I really don't know what all the "turned on" vxd's do. Like I said I really got lucky. If you have time maybe you could explain it to me.

This site is great!

Thanks,

Fred

If I knew, I would be happy to share... but I haven't a clue.

I'm just glad to hear you got it working, and I am going to put this one in the archives for future reference.
