I have an IBM E3N, AMD 300MHz, 182MB's RAM, a 6.8Gig H.D. with "C", "D", & "E" partitions. I'm running Win98SE. I first run Scan Disk on all partitions, then When I try to run the Defrag program, it starts on "C" and progresses to 10% and then stops. A message appears briefly before Defrag resets to 0% and starts the process over again. The message that appears is: "Drive's Contents Changed. Re-starting". This cycle keeps repeating itself until I cancel Defrag?? Any ideas??

If I could only have a nickel for every person that has the same problem as you do I'd be a millionaire. Anyway, Startup in SafeMode and run your defrag from there. Other tasks running in the background interfere with defrag, but SafeMode eliminates the problem.

Restart the PC and keep pressing F8 during the bootup. Take the option for "SafeMode" from the startup menu. Once in SafeMode, I can't remember if screensavers still come on in SafeMode but first be sure to turn off any screensavers just in case. Then run your defrag. When it's done click on Start>Shutdown>Restart to get back in Normal mode.

I'm going to archive this one, so next time someone has this problem we can point to it as an "already solved" issue.
