PCMCIA blown or software problem

I have an ACER extensa 710T laptop with Texas PCMCIA card controller. I have two PCMCIA cards both of which only seem to work in slot 1. When inserted into slot 2 however I get errors. Does this mean that slot 2 has blown or could a software conflict or conflict cause this problem. Thanks

Thanks Larry for your reply. The error messages are basically that the pcmcia card driver is not present when infact it is. Even when you reinstall the driver it still gives you the same error. Also if you disable the pc card sockets then turn it on & off again and reinstall the pc card socket drivers - it still doesn't work. Also you don't have to reinstall any of the drivers if you simply insert the pc card into the other socket!! This is all quite odd...

Well, if it is just the one slot, I would have to say hardware. Slots share memory space, so if nothing is in either, it will take the same memory no matter which you use. Don't see a conflict being possible.

Thanks Larry,

I sort of thought it must be hardware...I was hoping that someone had come across this problem with PCMCIA ports before and would know how I could fix it - I'm quite good with a soldering iron. I don't suppose anyone else knows of a way to test the port??

JUst for anyone who comes across this problem - I've found the answer. I seem to have had a virus w32/ska which corrupted wsock32.dll - which I imagine must be involved in the PCMCIA port in some way...I think the virus must occupy the area of code that controls the 2nd PC card port as since I replaced the corrupted file everything the 2nd port has begun working again!!!!

I've never heard of a virus doing something like that before.
