I understand the relationship between OE5 and Outlook 2000 now so I can receive Newsgroups there. I reinstalled OE5 and made it my default. As long as OE5 is the default, the mailto hyperlinks work. If I set Outlook 2000 as the default, they don't work. I tried changing the URL:mailto values to Outlook 2000 but it will not cooperate.

I guess I am stuck with OE5 as my default mailer unless you kind people have additional suggestions.

Try this in Internet Explorer, Tools>Internet Options>Programs tab, under Internet Programs for E-mail, hit the drop down arrow and select Outlook. Hit Apply, OK. Test it by selecting my Send me a message Icon above. Click on my e-mail address and Outlook should load a new message with my e-mail.

In Outlook Express, Tools>Options>General tab, at the bottom of the page you should see This Application is NOT the default mail handler.
Also, it should say This Application is the default news handler.

I was able to edit the URL:MailTo Protocol File type without changing any settings in Internet Explorer and Outlook brought up the new message with e-mail address instead of Outlook Express.

In Windows Explorer View>Folder Options, File Types tab. Scroll down and highlight the URL:MailTo Protocol. Select Edit, select the Open action, select Edit.

Verify the following entry for the Open command is:
"< Drive >:\< Path To >\OUTLOOK.EXE" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"
include the quotes and note the < spaces >

If yours is a typical install like mine the path is:
"C:\Program Files\Microsoft Office\Office\Outlook.exe" -c IPM.Note /m "%1"
in which case you can just copy and paste the above command.

Had it been a snake I would have been dead!

All I had to do (I discovered) was to go the the I/E toolbar>tools>internet options> programs>email and select Outlook. Now I'm using outlook for everything. Seems like someone suggested that one time and it didn't work. So whatever! thanks a bunch until the next time.

p.s. I'm still running oe5 for newsgroups.
