Unhappy IE60 - Links will not open in new window
I beleive I have a rather unique problem. When I click on a hotlink on any website that requires the web page to open in a new browser window, my computer opens the new window but does absolutely nothing. I have waited and waited but nothing happens. The dialogue in the status bar of my newly opened Internet Explorer Browser window claims "done". I have to flip back and forth between the blank page and the one with the hotlink, so I can look at the intended web address in the status bar by hovering my mouse pointer over the link. Need less to say this is extremely tedious and inefficient. Help me please. liltuffy2@hotmail.com

I can assure you: it's not a unique problem.

On the contrary, it happens a lot, especially with IE 6.0.

First, try setting IE5 as your default browser. Go to IE tools/internet options/programs and turn on the check box for IE to check if it is the default browser. Shut down and restart IE. When it asks to be default browser, say yes.

If no joy, try repairing IE, if you have that option available: Description of the Internet Explorer Repair Tool

If you don't, do this:

Go to Start - Run (type each line below separately, then press OK)

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

Note: you should see a brief message after each entry.
Reboot and test IE - New Window, repost with your results.

Some (and this does refer to Windows 98 only) have reported that reverting back to an older oleaut32.dll version from their CD did the trick.

So, my next advice would be to restore Oleaut32.dll from your Windows CD-ROM with System File Checker: How to Extract Original Compressed Windows Files

Good luck,

Pleasure!

Do I also take it your problem was solved?

And, out of curiosity, what exactly did it in your case?

Cheers,

problem solved
it was entering in those dll files one after the other in "run" and then rebooting. Really, that's it! I did the first thing but I already knew it was my default browser. thanks again. It was a real pain in the rear to have to manually type them each time!

I do have another question, if it's not too much. I want to change the "icon" in the upper right hand corner of IE60. It used to be the MS globe hologram morphing to a window and back and forth. Now it is the symbol of an internet provider that I tried for a couple of weeks. when I installed there software it took over my IExplorer. My title bar reads "the webpage I am on - Microsoft Internet Explorer provided by @Home.com" Can I get rid of this? If you can help, it doesn't go unappreciated.

There are two ways to do this:

1) Go to Start/Run, and type Regedit.

Drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main
Highlight 'Main' and look for the value 'Window Title' in the right pane.
Highlight it, and hit delete.
When you delete this value, "Microsoft Internet Explorer" becomes the default window title.

2) The 'miracle cure'... :

Close Internet Explorer and Outlook Express.

1. Press the Start button.
2. Press Run.
3. Paste in rundll32.exe iedkcs32.dll,Clear
(This is case sensitive, so better not type it manually)
4. Press OK.
5. Restart Internet Explorer.

This will remove Internet Explorer branding.

Good luck,

Additionally, the above fixes your Window Title.

The second one probably also does the little globe icon, but I'm not 100% certain.

If it doesnt, open Regedit again, and drill down to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Toolbar.

Delete the values BrandBitmap en SMBrandBitmap in the right pane.

Good luck.

wow
Truly amazing.

Yes it did get rid of the spinning globe. I only have a still picture of the MS Windows symbol. And Tony, I can live with that!
Is there a way an individual can brand his own IExplorer with his own icons or Title bar? I don't know, like "Microsoft Internet Explorer - Repaired by TonyKlein" hahaha.

Tony, you are a great resource. I only hope I can contact you if I ever have a serious problem and not one of the things that just proves to be annoying.

Thank you for your prompt response. If I can ever return the favor don't hesitate to contact me. liltuffy2@hotmail.com

You can change the window title at the same location you went to to remove the 'Window Title' value.

Just add another String Value 'Window Title' in the right pane, and let your imagination soar...

And do come back here, whether it's for a little annoyance, or a really big problem.

There's a lot of knowledgeable people that frequent this board, and everyone's sure gonna try to help you solve your problem.

Cheers,
