This PC can only transmit through our network using IPX/SPX. It cannot use TCP/IP. The following is a list of trouble shooting techniques that have been tried and the results.

The network cable and connection have been tested with the 'Compass' and certified. The problem exists only on this machine.
The machine repeats the problem were ever it is plugged in to the network. When trying to use 'ping' it returns an error: PING: transmit failed, error code 10091
When trying to use 'winipcfg' it returns an error: Fatal Error cannot read IP configuration
When trying to use Internet Explorer it cannot reach the intranet or the internet and returns an error.
The PC has had the network card deleted and restored. (The network card is embedded in the mother board.)
Novell Client32 has been deleted and restored. Using ms NetWare client did not work.
Windows 95 has been reloaded.
A clone machine with an image of the original PC was setup using an IP address and came up with the same results.
A clone of the original PC, on the same model, of Compaq was made to determine if it was a hardware problem. The clone failed in the exact same way. The original PC was recloned with a new image to fix the problem.

This same exact problem has occurred twice within the last week and both times the only cure was to reclone. The PC's were of different Compaq models.

Any help will be great.

I had a similar problem with several compaq machines on Win95 when we switched to the newest Novell client 31 on sp2 having to install tcp/ip. The solution we found here was running the ws2bakup in the c:\windows\wsbakup\ws2bakup.bat. Shutdown and restart in DOS and run it there. You will more than likely get some error at the end saying the file can not be run in DOS. That is ok. Then restart and go into Safe Mode and run it again from explorer ignoring whatever warnings and errors you get. Have you removed the TCP/IP in add/remove programs then reinstalled it? This will sometimes replace the obviously corrupt windows files used to run tcp/ip, however, the usual fix for us is the winsock repair of ws2bakup. Good luck..

The fix was to shutdown and restart in DOS mode and run c:\windows\ws2bakup\ws2bakup.bat.
Then reboot the machine. It worked the first time using 'winipcfg' then I used 'ping'. All okay.

Thanks so much for your help. This had baffled our staff for two weeks.

I had posted this to my staff as a challenge to see if anyone could solve the problem. The bet was:

Here is my challenge: The first technician that can resolve the problem with out recloning the machine or adding a second network card, I will by a 16 oz. beverage of your choice. (I will purchase the beverage on or off property up to $5.00)

Wish I could pay up to you for your help.
Thanks again to "stephani".
