Hi,
I Just installed Windows 98, I set up my dial up network configuration with my isp. I then went into internet explorer options under the control panel and set the connection to always connection with my default isp. Then I double click the internet explorer icon on my desktop, put in my username and password, and then click the save password and connect automatically boxes. When I then later on disconnected and click the IE icon again it never saves the password. Also when I go to My Computer/Dial-Up Networking/ and then I click on my internet isp and the save password box is grayed out so I never can save it,
What is the Problem?
Please Help
Thanks

Try going to Start>Find Files and Folders>and do a search for *.PWL (a password log file which if found will have your name instead of the *) and right click on it in the found box, select it with right click and Rename it to whatever.OLD. Reboot and you should get a Windows Login box which you put is a name but no password and select OK. Now go back and see if you can reinsert your name and password for dun/program.

Just to go a little further here. The most important part is to click on OK in the Windows logon box and not click on Cancel to get into Windows. You can just leave the password box blank and click on OK if you don't want to see the Windows logon box in the future at startup. Anyway, clicking on Cancel disables "Windows Password Caching", in which case, will not allow you to save passwords.

you need to install the microsoft family login client in your network setup.without it..win98 wont save the dialup password.
start, settings, controlpanel, network.

Please don't take any offense from this, but that's not correct. You would only need to install MS Family logon if you want to use multiple user profiles. Other than that it has nothing to do with whether Windows will save passwords.

No offense taken B,
What I meant to say was "client for Microsoft networks".
heres a post from computing.net that mentions both ways
"Some users have had luck solving this problem by installing the Client for Microsoft Networks. In the Control Panel, open the Network option. If the Client for Microsoft Networks is not at or near the top of the list, press the Add button, then choose Client, Microsoft, and then Client for Microsoft Networks. Press OK until all the dialog boxes are closed, then reboot.

The last thing to try is deleting your Windows password file. Do a search on your system for *.PWL, then delete or rename them. Reboot your system, and you'll notice that Windows will ask for a user name and password to log in. You're now re-creating this password information in your system. You don't have to enter a password here if you don't want to use one every time you log in, but you do need to enter a user name. This will rebuild the password file, and may allow your Dial-up Networking to save your dial-up password. "

so maybe my way is just a workaround, your way is what MS suggests, but either way, his problem is solved and thats what this forum is all about!

.your way does the trick too, but the way I mentioned also works
